A Wild Experience - Botswana Safari

One of the most frightening experiences you can ever imagine is waking up to the sound of elephant footsteps right outside your tent. This was my wake up call on my first Botswana safari expedition.

During the autumn month of April, me and my close friend Michelle went on our usual yearly escapade. We were like two girls seeking a little adventure, camping in the heart of the Botswana wilderness. We were staying in bush camps in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve in the Okavango Delta. A place filled with promise of adventure, but I dont think elephants creating havoc in our campsite was something either of us expected.

Big bullies
It was a breezy cool early morning. The signs that winter were approaching was becoming clear. Michelle woke me up. Alarmed we sat in our safari tent listening to the sound of something approaching. It didnt take long before we realized that it was a small group of elephants moving in on our campsite. The small group turned out to be two young bulls travelling together, looking for an easy meal.

We unzipped our window as softly and as wide open as we dared, for it is a common fact that young bulls, like these two, can show quite aggressive behaviour. We sat there for what felt like an eternity watching them sniffing around, pushing over and shoving around the camp. I can tell you that luck was on our side that morning, because they never showed any real interest in our tents. A good thing that our safari tents are also situated on raised teak platforms, which also provided some kind of sense of security. I breathed a sigh of relief when the two continued on their merry way.

The Moremi Wildlife Reserve
As soon as our two uninvited guests were gone, everybody came out of their tents, adrenalin pumping; the atmosphere was filled with excitement. During our hearty breakfast our guides informed us that the occurrence was not unusual. We were after all in their territory now. This was just the beginning of five days filled with Africas wildlife set in what is most certainly nature at its most beautiful.

The reserve is set in the north-eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and has stunning varied scenery. I cant remember in any of my previous safaris ever seeing this amount of wildlife in such a short amount of time. As usual there was the big five: elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and hippos. But we also had the privilege of seeing the unique sitatunga antelope.

Game for a little drive
We had a game drive every morning and evening on the back of an open 4x4 Land Rover. On one of our night drives we struck gold! A pride of lions were hunting and their victim was a feisty zebra. Although most people see this as horrible and cruel, the fact remains that it is still amazing to see nature in action. It took two lionesses to pin the zebra to the ground for what seemed like seconds to happen. The power lions possess is exhilarating. With panache they won a most difficult battle. I did feel sadness for the zebra, but this is the circle of life, even though its so cruel.

I dont think Ill ever grow tired of being so up-close and personal with Africas wildlife. Ive been privileged enough to have gone on a couple of safaris, but this being my first safari in Botswana I couldnt really understand why I hadnt travelled there previously.

Heading back to camp
After our game drive we headed back to camp. The guides set up a campfire and Michelle and I soon joined the rest of tourists to around the fire. Discussions involved the days sight-seeing and mainly about the lions hunting tactics. I think some of the tourists would take a long time to get over the initial shock of seeing something like that, for most of them found the experience simply horrible. The only thing everybody could agree on was how beautiful Botswana and specifically the Moremi Wildlife Reserve were.

After dinner and a relaxing nightcap, everybody set off to their tents with our armed guards, to what would be our last night of our safari. I think this trip was more than what Michelle and I could have hoped for and definitely set our expectations higher for our next wildlife adventure.

Kitchen utensils and gas appliances checklist - food container, insulator for frozen food, pots and pans, thermos, aluminium foil, fuel, stove, matches or lighter, disposable utensils, dish towels, bottle and can opener, knife, trash bags, zip lock bags, mugs, bowls, coffee pot, spatula, dish soap, table cloth and skewers for campfire barbequing or marshmallow toasting.

9. Children and baby supplies checklist - for babies, baby food, milk, diapers and baby wipes, pacifier, bottles, bibs, spoons, blankets, high chair, play pen, stroller, stuffed toys, tub and books. For toddlers, games for rainy days and for traveling, pencils, crayons, papers bucket and shovel, kites and frisbees.

10. Before leaving home checklist - lock all doors and windows, turn off all lights and appliances such as television and computer, hold all mail, water the garden, adjust the thermostat and make pet arrangements.

By no means that the above camp checklist is complete as there are a lot more that are not listed above. Be smart about what you consider necessary to bring and what items can you leave home without.

Explanation of the Offside Rule

Offside Rule - Usually, soccer rules are easy to grasp even by someone that's watching the game for the first time in his life. You foul someone, you get penalized. You hit him in the box, his team gets a penalty. The ball goes beyond the marked area, it's an out throw. Everything is really basic, except the soccer offside rules. This is one tricky rule and although it's not in the original soccer cookbook (as in, it was added over the course of time) it's a much needed one, so that's why I'll try to explain it a bit.

The offside trap rule only applies to attackers and it is meant to regulate both team's positions on the pitch. Without an offside rule, an attacker could simply stay in the other team's penalty box, receive balls and try to score. This would pin down the defenders and they would virtually be unable to play anywhere else outside their own penalty box, since their main job would be marking the striker that is lazying off in there.

It's also a known fact that attackers generally don't have the same effort requirements on the pitch, since they only need to participate in one phase of the game (the offense), unlike defenders and midfielders who have to participate in both the offense and defense, thus having to run more. So now that you know WHY the soccer offside rule is there, let's see WHAT it is anyway.

There are two phases of the offside soccer rule: the offside position and the offside trap sanction. If an attacker is in an offside position, he will only be sanctioned if the ball is heading towards him and he has an intention to play it. Otherwise, if he skips the game, he will not be called, despite having a clear offside position.

An attacker is in an offside position if he is closer to the other team's goal line than the ball and the second last opponent. You'll often hear people say "he was in offside, because he was further towards the goal than the LAST defender". This is actually not a correct statement, since this doesn't take the goalkeeper into account, so the LAST defender is actually the second last, as the above mentioned offside rule shows.

So let's say that team "Yellow" is attacking and "Red" is defending. The ball is at the feet of Yellow's midfielder and the Yellow attacker is a few meters further to the Red team's goal line, than the last Red defender. Then the Yellow attacker is in an offside position, but the referee will only call an offside sanction if the Yellow midfielder passes the ball to the Yellow attacker while the latter is in the offside position.

If you're new to soccer, the offside rule might need a bit of getting used to, but you'll soon be able to spot exactly how and why someone was called offside if you watch a few matches. Note that sometimes, the position of the attacker and the other team's defender are so close together, that the referee will have hard time deciding whether or not an offside should be called.

I was having issues myself with sound quality with these speakers until I went to Bose.com and read the user guide. These speakers are meant to produce sound both directly and reflectively. If you have all of the elements pointing forward with no surfaces to bounce off of the experience is not satisfying. You need to tuck the sub away in a corner (to reflect off the walls) and the smaller speakers I find work great with one element pointing directly and the other pointing at a wall (each speaker has 2 elements). The sound with the reflection is much richer and satisfying than when everything's pointed directly at you.

Golf - Chip and Pitch to Lower Scores

Most people think the answer to lower golf scores lies in hitting their drives further. The reality is that you will make more impact on your scores by chipping and pitching well. Yet many golfers don't know when to chip and when to pitch.

Pitching is when you are about 100 yards or less from the flag, and you hit a high shot with plenty of backspin to stop smartly when it lands. Yes, you can be pitching from 120 or 130 yards, but it is when you are closer in that you have most impact on your score.

You chip from closer in, usually from 40 yards in, right down to when you are just off the green. If you are a yard or so from the edge of the green you can putt successfully, so long as the grass is short, and the grain is not against you. But the chip is a safer shot once you get further out.

When to chip and when to pitch?

I see many golfers chipping when they would do better to pitch and vice versa, both round the practice green and on the course. What is the difference between the two?

It has nothing to do with how far you are from the pin, but everything to do with how you strike the ball. You usually pitch with a pitching wedge, or a specialty wedge, and sometimes with a sand wedge. It is vital that you hit the ball cleanly, coming down onto it - if you hit it 'thin', hitting into the back of the ball instead of near the bottom, you will hit the ball further than you want. It usually flies over the green. If you hit too thick, you will strike the turf first, and the ball may not reach the green.

This is important, because if you have a very bad lie, such as on a bald patch of earth or very short grass, you may not want to pitch unless you must. You will find chipping is more reliable, once you learn the basics

Bend your wrists to pitch

Assuming you have a reasonable lie, and you are 50 to 100 yards from the pin, you probably want to pitch. The important thing about pitching is that you must bend the wrists on the backswing.

Not sure if you can do it? Here's a practice routine. Go onto the practice ground, take a 7-9 iron, and stand with your feet close together. Practice swinging the Old Fashioned Eggnog Recipe back with your arms only, keeping your legs still. Your wrists should cock naturally, so that the club is about at a right-angle to your left forearm. If that is difficult just practice till it happens naturally.

The easiest way to do this is to hold the club loosely - never hold it really tight - and just swing it back. You probably don't need a full swing, so when you get to the top, you let the weight of the club bend or cock your wrists.

When you swing down - nice and slowly because it is control and accuracy you want, not distance - you let the wrists uncock, and strike down on the ball so it flies high, and then lands softly, not running far. Sounds simple, and yet I see many people trying to pitch stiff-wristed. When you are 100 yards from the green this works after a fashion, although the ball will not stop well, but once you get closer in it will land you in trouble.

How to get over a bunker

For example, say you are 30-50 yards from the green and there is a bunker in the way. Try to get over stiff-wristed and you are likely to end in the bunker or right over the green as the ball will not fly high enough to clear the bunker and land softly.

So you need to pitch, taking a short swing, cocking the wrists on the backswing so the ball flies high and stops quickly.

On the other hand, when you chip you must keep your wrists stiff, and not bend them. If you bend the wrists, the ball may go high or low, you may 'thin' the ball or hit behind it. In other words, you will be inconsistent.

What you need to do here is to take anything from a 7 iron to a pitching wedge - the 9 iron is actually ideal - and swing the club back like a pendulum. The swing it forward, still aiming to come down on the ball stiff-wristed.

The ball will fly low with just a little backspin, and run across the green. How far it runs depends on the club, but usually from twice to four times as far as it flies in the air depending on the club.

I recommend you use the 9 iron for all chipping, except when you need a bit more loft to get onto a slightly elevated green, when I would use a standard pitching wedge. Likewise, I would recommend using a standard pitching wedge for pitching, until you are very confident that you can get the ball near the hole. Then, you could experiment with the sand wedge for very short pitches.

In conclusion, when you pitch, you break the wrists to get the ball high in the air. You chip stiff-wristed to get a low flight. If in doubt what should you do? Chip every time. You will find you soon become accurate with your chip shots, but it will take longer to learn to pitch accurately.

More and more people are beginning to make their dog's food at home rather than buying commercial formulas. Homemade dog food doesn't contain any substances that could possibly be harmful to your dog's health such as artificial coloring and artificial flavors.

Another reason to make homemade dog food is the preservatives added to the commercial dog food. Homemade dog food has the benefit of optimum freshness without preservatives.

There are dogs that would greatly benefit from a homemade diet. Some dogs who suffer from allergies that cause severe itching may find relief once switched from commercial dog food to a homemade diet.

Processed dog food is a relatively new product and scientists don't fully understand the differences between commercial food and a diet of fresh food. There may be problems occurring in a dog's health because he is being given food that has had the nutrients cooked out of it and then sprayed back on.

It's also possible that the extremely high heat used to produce commercial dog food may alter the protein structure in the meats used. It's not proven whether such protein alteration negatively affects a dog's health, and since dogs seem to maintain their regular health during regulated feeding trials most people feel that commercial food is good enough to maintain their dog's health.

What if you want more than to give your dog a food that is "good enough". There are many recipes you can use. There are ebooks available with a variety of recipes that will provide your dog a well-rounded diet full of nutrition and every vitamin and mineral he needs.

There are certain foods you want to avoid, such as fatty meats, cured meat, (sausage, bacon, hot dogs), any fried foods and raw pork. You also want to avoid any milk, cream, ice cream, pastries, white bread, sugary foods, grapes, raisins and onions. Also, keep in mind that anything you consider to be junk food would not be good for your dog.

Healthy foods to give your dog would include raw or cooked lean cuts of meat: beef, poultry, lamb, whitefish and fatty fish (like salmon). Also included in a healthy diet are cooked grains, eggs (raw or cooked), finely chopped or ground raw vegetables (remember, no onions), and bits of fruit (again, remember to give your dog no raisons or grapes).

These are just the basics. There are books on the subject that provide great recipes and a full list of good foods and foods to stay away from.

A basic formula for a homemade diet would be 50 percent protein, 25 percent vegetables (ground so they are easy to digest), and 25 percent grain (such as rice and oatmeal). Add to that some supplements of certain vitamins, minerals, and oils rich in omega-3 for healthy skin and coat.

There are some pets that do not do well on a homemade diet so be sure to check with your vet before making any changes to your dog's diet. After making the change, pay attention to how your dog responds. Not all dogs thrive on a homemade diet.

Some dogs may have trouble adjusting and others might not like the food or suffer from temporary digestive upset. Slowly changing the dog's diet, gradually giving more of the homemade food and less of the commercial, can help alleviate stomach upset.

If you have the time it takes to prepare your dog's food, or feel very strongly about providing your dog with the best diet possible, a diet of homemade food can't be beat.

Not all golf instruction is good for your game!

What? Yep, I'm not kidding. Once I fully realized this, it freed me up to begin to start playing my best. Not Tiger Woods best or Annika's best, but Craig's best. You see, I was a fanatical golf magazine reader and I was always asking for tips from playing partners to help me with parts of my swing when I'd hit a bad shot.

I was so twisted up in knots about golf advice that I never had a chance. In fact, it was when I literally gave up "trying" to improve that I made my biggest gains. I took every tip I saw or heard, work on it at the range for awhile, and then proclaim to myself that I have now found the answer to my golf swing troubles!

That would last for all of about 2 holes before I would give up on that idea as I continued to spray my shots. Were these bad golf tips? No, top pros created them and used them on their students in their lessons with much success. The problem for me was, I wasn't in these lessons! (By the way, if you have no idea how to swing a club, then a set of lessons or ONE and only ONE instruction program should be your first move).

You can't transplant a chicken leg to a one-legged human patient and expect the person to then walk! There are so many different theories on not only how to swing a golf club, but also in how to TEACH how to swing a club. Much of it actually contradicts or is completely opposite from one teacher to another. On top of that, we have all sorts of different body types, muscle strengths, flexibility levels and on and on that make for many different (and now here's the kicker) SUCCESSFUL golf swings!

I am here to tell you, right now, in print, that for most of us: Your swing is good enough!

Even one of the greatest golf teachers of our time, David Leadbetter stated that "there is no definitive method" to a golf swing. This leads me to the heart of today's lesson. And that is, The Pareto Principle. If you've never heard of it, it has also been called the 80/20 rule (or 90/10 rule) and it basically means that if you work on the 20% most important items first (for whatever you are trying to achieve), you will be 80% effective! In other words, you want to get the most results from the least efforts. Especially if you're a busy person with little time to work on your game.

You know that the whole golf industry is geared toward selling you new equipment each year and teaching you how to get "the perfect swing" (which doesn't exist anyway). Don't get me wrong, improving your swing is not a bad thing. But it is not necessary for you to get quick, time-efficient score-lowering gains. The proof of this lies in the fact that there are countless top professionals that win at the highest levels with unorthodox swings! Look at Jim Furyk, who won the U.S. Open. And he has a huge LOOP in his swing. Look at Allen Doyle on the Champions Tour, he looks like he's hitting a hockey puck! Lee Trevino always said that students should NOT try to copy his swing and we all know how successful he was. He was beating Jack Nicklaus in his prime! Spend some time watching the Champions Tour and you'll see all sorts of wacky swings.

Forget about the pros for a minute. How many times have you seen a senior at your local course hit the ball straight down the middle nearly every time without hardly making any turn in his swing. While you blast drives 60 yards by him he destroys you on the scorecard. Do I need to remind you that it's only the final score that matters in this game?

Stop working on your swing and start working on SCORING! There is no prize for the prettiest swing. Shoot, even though I am still tempted, I now actually force myself to ignore any swing instruction that I see in a magazine or book and just keep on with the basics of what I learned while striving for a REPEATING SWING, and not a perfect one. You can always work on your swing later after you tackle the 20% most important stuff. In my program, I tell you exactly what the top golf researchers have found to be that 20%, especially for us average golfers.

The next group of guns to look at is the Gas Powered Airsoft guns. These guns operate by compressed air that fires the BB. The gas is either stored in an onboard cylinder or a gas filled magazine that connects to the gun. Some of the more popular styles are the gas blowback guns or commonly called the GBBs. The compressed air that fires the BB also returns the firing slide to the fire position at the same time. This return action creates a realistic recoil sensation from which the name blowback is derived. Reputed to be great fun to play with, the high-end GBB model guns can also cost around several hundred dollars. The non-blowback gas guns are less costly and start at around 40 dollars.

The last category of guns to look at is the Spring guns, which are also referred to as the Springers. Commonly tagged the cheap Airsoft gun, these spring guns were the original Airsoft models. In order for the gun to fire, a spring mechanism must be manually cocked back each and every time. Due to their simplistic design, the Springers are the most inexpensive and cost effective Airsoft guns. These guns are recommended as perhaps the best for entry-level players. Most players at some point have owned one of these models, which can be purchased for as little as 20 dollars.

In an effort to find a cheap Airsoft gun the shopper must keep in mind the value for the money. Even though one can purchase a gun for around 20 dollars, this does not mean that the gun is cheap in quality. A well made 20 dollar Springer can be a great value for the money, just as a two hundred dollar AEG can be a great value as well. Usually no matter the price, buying a gun from a well-established Airsoft manufacturer is important and worth the investment.

SA Women 'Prefer Shopping To Sex'

Its been one of the burning issues of modern male-female relationships. Weve suspected as much for a long time and now, finally, our worst fears have been confirmed. A recent survey conducted in South Africa concludes that women value shopping above sex.

A drinks company recently conducted a Fantasy Survey that asked a series of questions about womens fantasies. The study revealed that 45% of women surveyed valued shopping over sex, while only 26% value sex over shopping. In addition, the study found that 75% of the women surveyed believed that they have a shoe fetish and 70% felt that they did not have enough clothes in their wardrobe.

That cant be a very encouraging sign for men and it certainly takes a huge part of the romance out of modern relationships. Does that mean we should now woo a woman with shoes and gift checks instead of roses and chocolates? Does that mean that we now take them on dates to the shopping mall instead of to the theater and restaurants? All of a sudden, the price tag for romance and dating has suddenly hit a roof. It reminds one of the old Madonna song that goes, Im living in a material world and I am a material girl.

And here are some findings that should be especially important for men: Nearly half or 48% of the women believed that men had no real understanding of their needs and desires while another 40% felt that they were still misunderstood but that men made an effort to understand their wishes.

The Fantasy Survey also highlighted womens aspiration for fame and prestige. As many as 78% of women respondents said they fantasized about attending the Oscar awards and being given a red-carpet welcome. In addition, 72% of women surveyed had dreams of being an actress in any of the leading South African soap operas.

And heres the survey finding that really takes the cake: a stunning 63% of women respondents said that the world would be better and more peaceful if the women were put in charge instead of the men. Apparently, after spending decades aspiring for and attaining equality of the sexes, women now want to run the whole show.

Rule 3: Women have a very particular and specific shopping pattern

Men are famous for rushing to the store for a single purchase that they make quickly with minimal research and often on impulse. Women don't do that: they make multiple purchases in one trip, are more likely to research the purchase, more likely to take it back, and less likely to be impulsive. Some thoughts:

Women are demanding in making the initial purchase in a category, they recoup their time investment by staying more loyal to the brand they've chosen in subsequent purchase cycles increasing retention rates

Word-of-mouth recommendation is more prevalent among women, they are more likely to recommend to others those brands or salespeople that impress them favorably -- in essence, free marketing of the most powerful kind..

The big risk capturing women and losing men. Well, it turns out not to be a risk at all. Companies have found that marketing and service improvements designed to enhance brand appeal among women have resulted in greater customer satisfaction among men as well. The reason? In many respects, women want all the same things as men - and then some. Accordingly, when you meet the higher expectations of women, you are more than fulfilling the demands of men. Experience indicates that men do not abandon brands that tilt the purchase experience toward women. However, we would point out that economically, given the purchase and money data shown earlier who cares if you lose a few low value male customers?!!!!!

If you're a man (or a woman who's been brought up on traditional methods), isn't it worth re-orienting your thinking. Absolutely! If you think 80% of the market is worth it. And don't forget, after lots of male-orientation, in many categories, the traditional male targets are saturated; the corresponding women's segments are untapped and virtually uncontested by competition.

What Do Women Really Want?

A common question men ask is what do women really want?

They seem to say things like "I want a nice guy" and then they end up dating a complete jerk. If they don't go out with a jerk then they go out with the "bad boy". When a man asks me that question, I ask them why do they feel compelled to have an answer to that?

Before a man can answer that question he first needs to be able to answer "what do I want in a woman?" Every man has a different set of beliefs, values, and preferences and he should really put some thought on how important they are to him. Using myself as an example, I'm at a point in my life where I don't want to be in a relationship.

So the #1 value I'm looking for in a woman right now is that she has to be fun and easy-going. Someone else might be looking for a woman that places higher value on things like family, communication, finances, etc.

Once a man has figured out what he really wants in a woman, then it makes it much easier for him to screen out the women that does not fit his criteria and he focus his time and energy on the ones that do. So we come full circle and get back to the common question that men ask me and that is "what do women really want?".

Every woman is unique and different, but over the years I've noticed some commonalities that they share. We are assuming that we are also talking about emotionally healthy women that are not dealing with a lot of personal issues. Here are some of the common things that women want?

1. Women want a man with a spine - A very common complaint I hear from women around the world is that it's hard to find a real man. What does that mean anyway? They are looking for a man who has his own opinion, who is not afraid to disagree with her, and a man who will stand up for himself and for her.

2. Women want a man with leadership skills - Whether it's going out for a night out on the town or in the bedroom, a woman wants a man who is not afraid to be the Alpha Male.

He's not afraid to lead. This does not mean that he acts controlling or jealous. On the contrary, a man who is either a natural leader or has honed his leadership skills because he has dated a lot of women, will know when and how to lead. A great way of leading is to give your date 2 to 3 options on what to do for that coming weekend and then letting her decide. For the first date, you should do what you like because this will help you screen her to see if she likes doing what you like to do.

3. Women want a man, not a boy - An attractive woman who is healthy and well-balanced does not want to date a boy.

She wants a man who has his own life, has goals, and ambition. He doesn't live with his parents, he has his own place, and does not have financial problems.

4. When she's ready she will want a man who can commit - When a woman begins developing feelings for you, she will let you know it. She will start talking about the future, either directly or indirectly. She might start saying things like "wouldn't our kids be cute?" or "wouldn't it be cool if we went to Hawaii next summer?".

When a woman makes foward-looking statements that hint about the future, then it's a huge sign that she wants to take things to the next level. Sure, some women casually date, but ultimately most women eventually want to settle down with someone. It's up to you to pay attention and listen to what she's really saying to you.

5. Women want a man with a healthy self image and style - Ever had an old girlfriend nag at you because you wore the same stupid baseball cap? Or maybe because you needed to trim those eyebrows of yours? Ever go to the shopping mall with a woman and she starts suggesting on what things you should wear? Attractive women want a man with style. It's obvious that women don't like slobs. Most men don't have a good sense of style which is why they should recruit a female friend or relative to go shopping with them. If that's not possible, simply going to a shopping mall and looking for the most attractive female clerk to help you can do the trick.

Having style isn't enough. You should also have a positive outlook toward life and your future. Women find that very attractive. No one likes a whiner or a complainer, so if you have a tendency to be negative you really should make an effort to get that handled.

Otherwise you might look back a few years from now and ask the same question "what do women really want?"

3. Do you trust the provider who will be taking care of your child? If you dont trust the provider chances are you will leave the center. Also understand that child daycares arent perfect. Anytime you leave your home you take the risk of error. Im not trying to protect the child daycare center, but people do make errors and understand that children will be children. They will argue, get dirty, hit their friends and so one but realize that they are learning and this is their nature at such a young age.

I think that the above questions are so important in asking yourself. Realize that choosing a child daycare center is an important decision. Children need consistency and stable loving relationships- this is so much more important then fancy toys and big buildings.

Premiering in 1978 as a five part mini-series, the show combines the usual sex and innuendo of classic afternoon soap operas with the freewheeling adventure of Texas wildcats and filthy rich capitalist oil barons. The combination of business dealings and rampant affairs tested well with both the male and female demographic, prompting CBS to make Dallas a regular part of its prime-time lineup. The result was one of the most successful television shows in history. In fact, the so-called Who shot J.R.? episode (A House Divided Air Date: 3-21-1980) still reigns as the second most watched TV show in history (the season finale of MASH is #1). In this noncommercial social network, a full one-third of the homepage real estate is now promotional material. What gives?

What gives is that myspace.com has successfully evolved from a micro blogosphere to a mass medium. Branding can and should be done on myspace, but its not classical branding like youd learn about at a desk at Wharton. This is dynamic branding.

Let me explain. When someone such as myself writes traditional advertising, we think of what single thing we want to say to our target audiences so that, given a certain number of paid impressions, that idea sinks into the collective populace and starts to produce sales. We think of an image that will rest in peoples minds as compelling and representative of the brand, like the iconic Coke bottle or the still images from iTunes.

When we look to extend brands on myspace, its a whole different ball game. Our brands should not look to create a single impression for many, but a myriad of relationships and images for the people who will befriend us. We need to speak in a different language shorthanded language. The language of friendship is briefer, more intimate, and it constantly changes. It can have typos, for gosh sake! Its not the pristine world of the print ad. Thats why some brands, like Walmart, have failed in myspace: by throwing their .com microsite content into myspace, Walmart is saying, We dont want to know ya. We just want to sell ya.

Another big difference is in measuring what youre going to get from presence on myspace. You are putting your brand out there not to be the biggest and the best among target audiences you can select from media tools, but to garner relevance among people that choose you. This idea of relevance seems like a big risk to marketers. In fact, Rob Frankel calls myspace a branding failure for this reason. Is it a failure, or simply another medium whose terms we must learn to understand and embrace in order to succeed? A brand could benefit by having more consumers who know them more intimately. Maybe brand loyalty is going to make a terrific comeback due to myspace!

A third topic that stupefies marketers is the notion of going where the money is. If myspace is full of people who are still primarily students, why bother with them? Shouldnt you go where the money is, instead? Problem with this logic is that not only are kids more monetarily endowed nowadays, theyre the adults of the future. Theyll work at your company and be in the market for the stuff you sell. Befriend them early and theyll remember you later.

2. Hire a team of bloggers. Newspapers have contributors, blogs can too. If you've ever used writers to do articles and content for you , they can do the same type of thing with a blog. Many of the most successful blogs are already doing this. The combination of group promotion effort, regular updates and pinging can help bring in traffic quickly. One thing to note here is blogs are a somewhat social tool. Some very popular niche blogs are not all that visible in the search engines, yet they get a lot of traffic because people recommend them and they become a sort of buzz hub. Search engines do not always pick up on this but they do eventually. This is why group blogging can be very powerful because you're leveraging the power of not one (your) influence group but several people's influence group. If you do pay your bloggers, you can always offset this cost by displaying Adsense ads. 5. Automating Your Blog. One of the things I love about using Wordpress as a publishing tool is that it offers a forward blog entry option that saves me tons of time. By using this tool you can blog ahead of time and have your entries posted on the day and time you choose. So let's say you have a week's worth of posts ready to go. You don't have to come back each day and post, instead you write everything up in one day and schedule a new post out 24 hrs after the next. This will save you time!

Let's face it. There will be times we have a ton to say and times we have little or nothing to share. Instead of having multiple entries one day and nothing over the next few days, by using forward entry you can blog everyday of the week. Or rather you blog once and the blog publishing tool does the job automatically the rest of the week. You can even forward blog for weeks and months ahead of time.

Causes of Bed Wetting: Eat, Drink, and Wet the Bed

Well, we're on a roll with causes of bed wetting theories. Here's one that seems to make sense. I'm still pretty much sold on the idea that it's a hereditary issue - but it seems like if there are other causes of bed wetting, they may be more controllable. If it's just heredity, you kind of have to wait it out until your child reaches the pre-set magical age of dryness. By nature not especially patient, the idea of waiting it out doesn't appeal to me.

So, here's what I've learned about the food and drink leading to bedwetting theory.

Chocolate

Oh no! Say it isn't so! Well, actually it's not necessarily the chocolate; it's the caffeine in chocolate that may cause bed wetting. What does caffeine do? It stimulates the body, including the bladder. So that evening cup of cocoa or slice of chocolate cake may be a problem. (Gosh, now I'm craving chocolate!)

Soda

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles. Carbonation is rumored to do strange things to immature bladders. Actually, for any adults who drink soda, you know first-hand that a can of Coke is a ticket to the restroom. It's an effect that's compounded by caffeine - and the sugar's probably not helping matters either.

Oranges and Grapefruits

OK, if you've actually got a child who will eat grapefruit, I'd like to hear about it! But oranges are another story. I get a strange reaction when I eat oranges (and raw cranberries for some reason) - my face gets hot and I feel kind of funky. So, I'm assuming it's possible to be allergic to citrus. The citric acid is the most likely culprit. Try cutting back on the orange juice and citrus in your child's diet to see what happens.

Spicy Stuff

There are some spices out there that could probably be rated pharmaceutical grade. Think of the effect Chinese mustard has on your nose! No doubt some of these spices have an equivalent effect on the bladder. Salsa, Asian food, and other hot, hot, hot foods may be contributing to the bedwetting problem.

A Little Bit About The Pekingese

The Pekingese, also known as Peking Palasthund and Little Lion Dog of Peking, are among the favorite American pets of the twenty-first century. The Pekingese is also referred to as a sleeve dog because it is said the Chinese royalty carried the little Peke in the sleeves of their robes.

There were no real lions in China. However, the Lion of Buddha was a sacred symbol from about the first century A.D. The artist of those days portrayed Buddhists symbols remarkably like the emperors palace dogs. The Pekingese were probably the artists models. Until 1860 the Pekingese was kept only by the imperial family. The Imperial family designated three types:

Lion Dogs for their manes and large forequarters;
Sun Dogs because of their golden red coats;
And Sleeve Dogs because they were often carried inside the rather large sleeves of the royal families.

According to historians when the British raided the Chinese Imperial Palace in 1860, they carried off five of these little dogs. One of these little dogs was presented to Queen Victoria and named Looty. The remaining four were given to Admiral John Hay. In John Hays Greenwood Castle these four Pekingese became the foundation stock for todays Western Pekingese.

Very little is known or available of the ancestors of the Pekingese. We do know Oriental breeding was common to produce small type pug-faced dogs with flowing coats.

The Pekingese is probably better suited to adult families or those with older children who understand the need of careful handling of small dogs. The Pekingese is sociable and loves to romp with its family. He can be somewhat stubborn, never loses courage or dignity. He is even-tempered, intelligent and affectionate. The Pekingese is a loyal companion. He is best trained with gentleness, consistency and with great patience. Reward every appropriate action with a kind word and a special treat. The Pekingese is usually not known as an alarm dog. He usually resents strangers, is bold, brave and may develop into a watchdog if encouraged.

The Pekingese have not changed a lot since they were residents of the royal palace of China. They are still small and compatible little dogs. They were bred to please their royal owners. Following the fall of the Chinese palace in 1860 they were seen in Great Britain. The AKC registered the Pekingese in 1906 and the breed has grown in popularity since that time.

Pekingese do not require a lot of exercise, long walks with its owner and backyard playtime is plenty for the Peke.

Grooming

You guessed it..the Pekingese does require quite a bit of grooming. Its coat is abundant, long, straight, flat and flowing. Most Pekingese have a black mask that extends to the ears and are seen in many different colors. Grooming should begin very early in the life of a Pekingese puppy. The fine coat tangles easy. Care must be taken to straighten or clip out mats as they form. The top coat is coarse with a thick undercoat. There is a profuse mane extending beyond its shoulders which forms a cape around the neck.

You will need a slicker or pin brush and a wide-toothed comb. Brushing regularly is essential. Pet Pekingese are more comfortable having their stomach, chest and genital area clipped very short. Show dog Pekingese, however, are not clipped in this manner.
